How to understand Quran 9:5 on killing polytheists?

It says: 'When the forbidden months have passed, kill the polytheists who are at war with you wherever you find them, take them captive, and besiege them, and lie in wait for them at every place of ambush. maulana yeh sawal saharanpur se aya hai swami amar pal singh ji ka unhon ne likha hai ke maulana sahib doctor aslam is involved in distributing the quran and i also got one copy from him which i am presently studying however there is one verse in the quran which i am not able to understand it is in surah altaubah that is chapter nine verse number five it says when the forbidden months have passed kill the polytheists who are at war with you wherever you find them take them captive and beseech them and lie in wait for them at every place of ambush but if they repent and take to namaz regularly and pay the arms then let them go their way god is forgiving and merciful my question is that why such a verse which supports violence is mentioned in the quran I want to understand the correct meaning of the verse and don't want to be misguided it could be that quran is saying something and I am understanding something else kindly clarify my doubt with respect to the above verse.
