قَالُواْ سُبۡحَٰنَكَ مَا كَانَ يَنۢبَغِي لَنَآ أَن نَّتَّخِذَ مِن دُونِكَ مِنۡ أَوۡلِيَآءَ وَلَٰكِن مَّتَّعۡتَهُمۡ وَءَابَآءَهُمۡ حَتَّىٰ نَسُواْ ٱلذِّكۡرَ وَكَانُواْ قَوۡمَۢا بُورٗا
They will say, "Exalted are You! It was not for us to take besides You any allies. But You provided comforts for them and their fathers until they forgot the message and became a people ruined
The Quranic commentator Ibn Kathir explains the reminder when he writes, ‘They forgot the message You had sent to them through the messengers (prophets) about worshipping You alone and no other.’ The addressee communities of the various prophets were not deniers of the truth or polytheists per se. The prophets sent to them had brought to them the message of worshipping one God alone. But, with the passage of time, they became engrossed in worldly affairs, and developed the belief that their elders and prophets, etc. would become the intermediate means of obtaining God’s pardon. But, on the Day of Judgement, all such beliefs will prove false. At that time, people will come to know that the only saviour from God’s reckoning is God Himself and no other.
’’ذکر‘‘ کی تشریح مفسر ابن کثیر نے ان الفاظ میں کی ہے أَيْ نَسُوا مَا أَنْزَلْتَهُ إِلَيْهِمْ عَلَى أَلْسِنَةِ رُسُلِكَ، مِنَ الدَّعْوَةِ إِلَى عِبَادَتِكَ وَحْدَكَ لا شريك لك (تفسیر ابن کثیر، جلد6، صفحہ

)۔ یعنی،وہ اس دعوتي پیغام کو بھول گئے جو ان کی طرف تونے اپنے پیغمبروں کی زبان سے تنہا اور لاشریک اپنی عبادت کے ليے اتارا تھا۔
حقیقت یہ ہے کہ انبیاء کی مخاطب قومیں معروف معنوں میں کافر اور مشرک قومیں نہ تھیں۔ وہ دراصل پچھلے انبیاء کی امتیں تھیں۔ ان کے پیغمبروں نے ان کو خدا کی ہدایت پہنچائی۔ مگر زمانہ گزرنے کے بعد وہ دنیا میں مشغول ہوگئے اور اپنے بزرگوں اور پیغمبروں کے بارے میں یہ عقیدہ بنالیا کہ وہ خدا کے یہاں ان کی بخشش کا ذریعہ بن جائیں گے۔ مگر جب قیامت آئے گی تو اس قسم کے تمام عقیدے باطل ثابت ہوں گے۔ اس وقت لوگوں کو معلوم ہوگا کہ اللہ کی پکڑ سے بچانے والا خود اللہ کے سوا کوئی اور نہ تھا۔
