وَإِذَا تُتۡلَىٰ عَلَيۡهِمۡ ءَايَٰتُنَا بَيِّنَٰتٖ قَالُواْ مَا هَٰذَآ إِلَّا رَجُلٞ يُرِيدُ أَن يَصُدَّكُمۡ عَمَّا كَانَ يَعۡبُدُ ءَابَآؤُكُمۡ وَقَالُواْ مَا هَٰذَآ إِلَّآ إِفۡكٞ مُّفۡتَرٗىۚ وَقَالَ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُواْ لِلۡحَقِّ لَمَّا جَآءَهُمۡ إِنۡ هَٰذَآ إِلَّا سِحۡرٞ مُّبِينٞ
And when our verses are recited to them as clear evidences, they say, "This is not but a man who wishes to avert you from that which your fathers were worshipping." And they say, "This is not except a lie invented." And those who disbelieve say of the truth when it has come to them, "This is not but obvious magic
The Quran presented clear arguments to its opponents which they were unable to counter. In spite of this, they were successful in dissuading the common people from accepting the truth. The sole reason for this success was that the disbelievers played on the sentiments of the common people and stirred them up by saying that it (the Quran’s message) was against the traditions of their forefathers. The miraculous literary value of the Quran was undeniable, and therefore, attempts were made to convince people that its supposed greatness depended solely on magical feats of expression which had nothing to do with divine revelation; it was only a miracle of penmanship and not the result of the knowledge of reality. It is most interesting that as a matter of historical record, for people of every period, prejudice has proved stronger than rational arguments. The Quran’s addressees could have put forward rational arguments to reject it or they could have referred to any other divine scriptures from which a contradiction to the Quran could have been produced. But none took recourse to either of these possibilities. If people so blatantly deny the call for Truth, it is due to nothing but stubbornness.
قرآن اپنے مخاطبین کے سامنے کھلے کھلے دلائل دے رہا تھا۔ مخاطبین دلیل سے اس کا توڑ نہیں کرسکتے تھے۔ اس کے باوجود وہ عوام کو اس سے روکنے میںکامیاب ہوگئے۔ ان کی اس کامیابی کا واحد راز یہ تھا کہ انھوں نے لوگوں کو یہ کہہ کر اس کی طرف سے مشتبہ کردیاکہ یہ ہمارے اسلاف کے طریقہ کے خلاف ہے۔ قرآن میں جو معجزانہ ادب تھا اس کا انکار ناممکن تھا۔ اس کے بارے میں لوگوں کو یہ کہہ کر مطمئن کردیاگیا کہ یہ محض جادو بیانی کا کرشمہ ہے، وحی الٰہی ہونے سے اس کا کوئی تعلق نہیں۔ یہ محض قلم کا زور ہے، نہ کہ علم حقیقت کا زور— تاریخ کا یہ تجربہ نہایت عجیب ہے کہ ہر دور کے لوگوں کےلیے دلیل کے مقابلہ میں تعصب زیادہ طاقت ور ثابت ہوا ہے۔
قرآن کے مخاطبین کے پاس قرآن کا انکار کرنے کےلیے یا تو عقلی دلائل ہوتے جن کے ذریعہ وہ اس کو رد کرسکتے یا ان کے پاس کوئی دوسری آسمانی کتاب ہوتی جس سے قرآن کی تردید نکالی جاسکتی۔ مخاطبین قرآن کے پاس ان دونوں میں سے کوئی چیز موجود نہ تھی۔ مزید یہ کہ دنیوی ترقی میں بھی وہ دوسری قوموں سے بہت زیادہ پیچھے تھے۔ جن لوگوں کا یہ حال ہو وہ اگر دعوتِ حق کا انکار کرتے ہیں تو اس کی وجہ ہٹ دھرمی ہے،نہ کہ معقولیت۔
