إِذۡ يَغۡشَى ٱلسِّدۡرَةَ مَا يَغۡشَىٰ
When there covered the Lote Tree that which covered [it]
Al-Lat, al-‘Uzza and Manat were the deities of ancient Arabia. Al-Lat was located in Taif, al-‘Uzza in Nakhla near Makkah and Manat in Qudayd near Madinah. These three, according to the popular belief of those days, were the daughters of god, and so they were worshipped. A belief of this kind was undoubtedly a baseless supposition. It is a contradiction in itself. These polytheists used to consider it a degrading thing to have daughters. So, God wanted them to ask themselves if He, who was the Creator of sons and daughters, were to create children for Himself, would He have created daughters for Himself?
لات اور عزی اور منات قدیم عرب کے بت تھے۔ لات طائف میں تھا۔ عزیٰ مکہ کے قریب نخلہ میں اور منات مدینہ کے قریب قُدَید میں۔ یہ تینوں ان کے عقیدہ کے مطابق خدا کی بیٹیاں تھیں، اور وہ ان کو پوجتے تھے۔ اس قسم کا عقیدہ بلا شبہ ایک بے بنیاد مفروضہ ہے۔ مگر اسی کے ساتھ وہ خود اپنی تردید آپ ہے۔ ان مشرکین کا حال یہ تھا کہ وہ بیٹیوں کو اپنے لیے ذلت کی چیز سمجھتے تھے۔ فرمایا کہ غور کرو، خدا جو بیٹا اور بیٹی دونوں کا خالق ہے، وہ اپنے لیے اولاد بناتا تو بیٹیاں بناتا۔
’’کیا انسان وہ سب پا لیتا ہے جو وہ چاہے‘‘ —اس کی تشریح کرتے ہوئے شاہ عبدالقادر دہلوی لکھتے ہیں ’’یعنی بت پوجے سےکیا ملتا ہے، ملے وہ جو اللہ دے‘‘۔
